pretty imperfect makeup

Friday on Cup of Jo, Joanna shared a link to NYTimes article

You Can Fall Out of Bed and Look Good

where reporter Stephanie Rosenbloom forecasts 2012's trend of imperfect makeup. This is the first time I've heard of this officially being a trend - and not just for hair (see: the ponytail from summer 2011, the ever-lurking chignon).

Rosenbloom says, "GOODBYE, lip liners, brow pencils, spackled-on foundations. The hottest beauty trend of 2012 is imperfection...Tousled hair, smudged eyeliner, dewy lips and luminous skin are in."

What a breath of fresh air! Ive been doing a version of this makeup trend since about May of last year. Why May? Well that spring my BFF Caitlin clued me in on "dewey" vs. matte makeup. Also last May was when I started dating my sweetheart Ky, and nothing says 'new relationship' like trying to look like you're not wearing makeup while wearing makeup. You know it's true - admit it.
Techniques I do...
  • Under eye concealer. All day, everyday.
  • Bronzer for contouring - maybe not "dewy" but I'll argue contouring adds to my 'maybe she's born with it' looking bone structure = always a good thing.
  • Layer upon layer of thick mascara - just the look Im loving right now for lashes.
  • Flawless yet light coverage by applying mix of regular foundation with face SPF daily.

Techniques I'll incorporate ...
  • Hair glaze once a month - protects hair, suggested in the article.
  • More creamy metallic eyeshadows - Bobbi Brown
  • Brow pencil, a shade or two lighter than my current eyebrow powder (as a blonde, it is a must)
  • 'Stained' poppy pink and bright colored lip and cheek stain

  6. i think cheek stain is so subtle and youthful and any trend that cuts down on prep time is ok in my book.

    :)
